The theme revolves around one of the most defining moments in art history–The Art of the Dutch Golden Age.
The Dutch Golden Age (1575-1675) was a period in the history of the Netherlands, roughly spanning the 17th century, in which Dutch trade, science, military, and art were among the most acclaimed in the world. It was one of the most significant eras in the history of art.
Art lecturer Suzanne Altman will present an overview of the period and a discussion of artists such as Rembrandt, Hals and Vermeer, the artists who were a part of this resurgence in Dutch painting, and their lasting contributions and influence.
The works from this period usually do not depict the same extravagant splendor as depicted in Baroque painting, rather the paintings are characterized by detailed realism and the secular subjects. Subject matter such as landscapes, townscapes, flower paintings, maritime paintings, portraiture and still lifes of various types, as well as genre painting, (depictions of men and women in contemporary interiors, from a broad range of social classes, and engaged in mundane tasks) gained new importance during this time, and Suzanne will explore the reasons for this development. Many examples of each will be shown.
Suzanne Altman is an art educator and art historian who has presented art and art history programs in various venues to adult and teenage audiences. She is also a painter who works out of her studio and art school in Ossining, NY and exhibits frequently.
