Message from the Director: Happy 4th of July!

Dear Livingston Library Community,

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.

And so begins one of the most important documents in American history. In the words of Abraham Lincoln, the Declaration of Independence is “a rebuke and a stumbling-block to tyranny and oppression.” This Wednesday, before the picnics, the fireworks, and the parades, I encourage you to exhibit your patriotism by taking part in one of my favorite Livingston traditions –  the annual reading of the Declaration of Independence followed by a brief discussion. This family friendly 18-year tradition is held on July 4th at the gazebo on the Oval and begins promptly at 11:30am.

If you can’t make the reading, please consider stopping by the Library to borrow a copy to read aloud with family and friends. This July 4th, may the words of our founding fathers leave you inspired to stand for the principles of freedom and equality.
