Beach Reads, Fall Reads, Winter Reads, and Holiday Reads. These seasonal reads all bring to mind certain settings and even specific weather. When I plan my beach reading, I usually pack books set on the shore with picture perfect descriptions of oceans and salt water breezes. Similarly, when I plan my holiday reads, short books with snowy drifts may enter my mind. We often say that we read to escape, so why then do we so often pair our reading materials with the seasons? Who is to say that the beach read can’t be one set in the snow, and that a winter read isn’t one set during the hot August nights?
To see if I was alone in these seasonally specific bookish thoughts, I did an impromptu short survey of Livingston Librarians who just so happened to cross my path.
Here is what they said:
- Jessica, Adult Services: Yes (see above)
- Joseph, Adult Services: “Excuse me what? No.”
- Janea, Adult Services: “No. My choices are titles suggested by patrons and BCCLS.”
- Sharon, Administration: Does not choose books based by the season, with the slight exception of holiday novels.
Tell us in the comments below if you pair your book choices with the seasons!
