Spring Gardening @ The Library

It’s almost springtime and the Livingston Public Library is excited for it’s Spring Gardening Workshop series in partnership with the Master Gardeners of Essex County, and led by Ms. Fran Kroeckel who has been a Master Gardener since 1999.

Fran is the chairperson of education outreach for children and adults. A former teacher and administrator, Fran has created and implemented gardening projects and done presentations for schools, preschools, garden clubs, senior housing and nursing homes.

Workshop 1: Starting Plants from Seed, Saturday, March 16thseeds
“There is no mystery to starting plants from seed”, says Fran.  Proper soil, appropriate light, and the correct amount of heat and water will yield numerous seedlings which signal the beginning of your garden. “Planting from seed offers one the opportunity to experience growing a wider variety of flowers and vegetables” adds Fran.  In this hands-on session, you will learn the proper way to sow seeds and experience the joy of “starting from scratch.”

Participants who wish to continue with the next class on transplanting are encouraged to bring their seedlings to class.

transplantingWorkshop 2: Transplanting techniques, Wednesday, April 3rd
Transplanting is the natural next step in the growing process.  After the seeds germinate, tender seedlings are moved into a new soil, and proper care is essential for their continued healthy growth and development.  In this session Fran will teach correct techniques for handling young transplants and the essentials of care and feeding that will promote a successful transplant of the young plant into the garden.

Workshop 3: Soils and Fertilizers, Friday May 3rdsoil
Successful growing really does begin at the ground level.  Determining the proper soil quality, providing the proper feeding and engaging in the proper watering create the environment which promotes successful gardening.  Fran will take a look at how soils can be modified to set the stage for productive growing, and will examine fertilizers for their appropriateness for your veggies and flowers.

All workshops are hands-on and all materials will be provided. They all run from 11 am to 12.30pm.  Space is limited and registration is required. You can register for one, two or all 3 sessions.
