Dear Livingston Library Community,
If there is anything more exciting than meeting a new up and coming author it’s the opportunity to celebrate the success of a Livingstonian! On the evening of July 24th at 7 pm we will have the opportunity to do both! The Livingston Public Library is very happy to present a Meet the Author event with young writer Lucy Tan and her debut novel “What We Were Promised.” Lucy Tan was born and raised in Livingston, New Jersey and went to Livingston High School, though she has spent most of the past 10 years in New York and Shanghai. Lucy used to hang out at the Library and wait for her mom after school; the Library was her favorite place! Lucy recently wrote to her mom “I fell in love with reading at the Library. I spent so many hours there waiting for you to be finished working and those hours really formed my personality.”
Join us as Lucy discusses her experiences writing the book, life as a young writer, and the story behind the book. The book has garnered a lot of positive reviews and praised as one of the most anticipated books of the summer:
- Longlisted for the Center for Fiction’s First Novel Prize
- A Barnes & Noble Discover Pick
- Named one of PopSugar’s “30 of the Newest, Hottest Books to Pick Up This Summer”
- Named one of “60 Books We Can’t Wait to Read in 2018” by Huffington Post
- Named one of the “10 Most Anticipated Novels of the Summer” by The Every Girl
- One of Refinery29’s Brilliant Books to Bring to the Beach This Summer

Friends of the Library will have copies of her novel available for purchase. The event is free and open to all, so please join us in giving Lucy a warm welcome back to her hometown.
All the best,
Amy
